Best Amps for Harmarica
If you are buying a used Harmarica, as I did not get for my recent Christmas gift, you will notice there is a wide range of different amplifiers and guitar effects on the market. This is especially true in the case of vintage style amps, antique reproductions of classic musical styles. So what are the advantages of choosing the best amp for harmonica and how do you determine if a vintage model is the best one for your needs?
A few years ago my wife began playing her harmonica solo on her acoustic guitar, mainly because we wanted to a more "live" sounding experience. We had tried out a number of different amplifiers but all with the same problem: the notes were very distorted. When we tried out a valve amp for our first recording, the first thing that was apparent is that the white noise that was produced was way too loud for us to hear comfortably. It certainly wasn't pleasing to our ears, nor did it help to create a warm and soulful sound for the music we were playing.
So we quickly looked for another solution. After much research it was obvious that we needed to go for an amp that was going to allow us to record without having to worry about unwanted noise. So we quickly found out that the best amp for Harmarica that we could find was the Black Face Minidiscs. We also quickly discovered that they had a reputation for being extremely reliable and for being able to capture some really great sounding music. That was exactly what we were looking for.
What made the Black Face Minidiscs the best amp for Harmarica for us? For one thing, they had a real cold front end. They were very smooth sounding, and had no harsh edges to them. Their logs and cymbals had the same lushness to them that the original harp used to have back in the 70's. One of the best things about them was that they had an incredibly tight low end.
It seems that people are starting to realise that they need to get some sort of reverb on their Harmarica's. That has been rectified by the Black Face Minidiscs. Instead of just using the standard 12AX7 preamp tubes that you find in most guitar amps, the Minidiscs feature twelveAX7's. This allows them to give you a smoother tone and less distortion. You can also get a bit of reverb if you want it from the front of the board.
Another reason that the Pro Junior Harmarica is the best amp for Harmarica for us was because it had a ton of different models to choose from. You had the Standard, the Deluxe, and the Element. Each of those series had a few different models of them, so if you wanted a model that did not have the same tone as another, you could do that. There were also just as many finishes to choose from.
There was also the Walleye out there in the 2021 year. This guitar had a lot of new features, and made use of a new type of pickup. It featured a magnet that was actually able to pickup electronic signals, rather than just the speaker cones. This was great because it meant that a lot more of the sound could be moved into the body of the guitar. The downside was that it also tended to pick up a lot of feedback due to the magnet picking up too much air, which was not good.
Finally there was the Joe_L acoustic that was available for the 2021 year. This amp did not quite get the same response as the above, but it did have a great sound. It also has a unique design that some people really like. It is rather unique in the fact that it does not have any real controls, but instead uses some rubber grips on the front to set the level. It also has two control knobs, but unlike most units this one actually makes use of actual musical rubber bands for some of its functions.
