There are many types of energy efficient space heater models out there, but not all energy efficient space heaters are created equally. With so many different types on the market today, it can be difficult to know which one is going to be the best for you. Most of the available heaters in the marketplace right now are probably far more energy efficient than your average portable space heater because of the many marketing claims they make. However, not every model on the shelf is as good as the next, so how do you know what the best energy efficient infrared heater is for you? While there certainly are lots of excellent space heaters out there, not all portable space heaters are made equal and some aren't much better than their cordless counterparts.

First of all, you really don't want to settle for a cordless portable space heater with a tiny amount of power. These typically only offer about six hundred to one thousand BTUs, far less than what's needed to warm up an entire room. Even if you get the highest rated cordless electric heaters for home use, chances are these energy efficient space heaters won't be able to sufficiently heat your entire space. Instead, look towards those with ten thousand or more BTUs. These energy efficient space heaters will adequately warm up your home and will drastically reduce your electricity bill each month.

Before you consider buying any of the best energy efficient space heaters for home use, there are several things you need to think about first. For example, how large of a heater would you like? There are models that can be as big as twenty or thirty feet wide, but these larger units are going to take up much more room and will most likely be harder to move around if you ever move. The same is true of how deep you want your space heater to go.

Next, you'll have to think about the different types of energy sources your space heater will be using. The most common types of fuel are gasoline or propane, both of which are available in small cans. However, if you don't have access to one of these, then you can opt for gas or even kerosene. The last option is infrared technology, which uses a laser to warm up the air. Obviously, these won't work quite as long as a standard heater, but they are a lot easier to maintain and keep track of.

There are also a number of different designs available for infrared heaters. Most use a fan-style housing, similar to that of a computer case. Some are box-like units that can stand on their own, while others are made to sit on a table. You can also get them in a smaller version suitable for rooms like bathrooms or even garages. The most economic of these, however, are the box style heaters.

You'll also need to pay close attention to the wattage rating for your space heater. While it isn't always listed on an energy star chart, this number tells you roughly how many watts your heater will be able to provide. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the unit will be. Just remember that an energy star heater won't always have the highest energy rating, so it's important to buy the one that has the energy rating you need. In general, you should try to find a heater that is within four percent of the maximum energy efficient rating for the space you plan to heat.

Finally, you'll have to think about the actual temperature settings for your heater. Although you can leave these set by default, which will get you a lower price, it is better to have some kind of temperature control. It may be nice to turn up the heat whenever you feel cold, but you can't always anticipate when the weather will change. If at all possible, leave the temperature settings on a low heat.

An eco-mode heater lets you choose a setting that conserves energy. They use the same thermostat, but instead of heating to the optimum temperature automatically (something that could become addictive), the sensor will recognize when it has reached its temperature and turn the fan off. This way, you can keep your house at the optimal temperature and save money at the same time. An eco-mode heater is especially recommended for older homes that might not yet have the technology to effectively control the temperature.
