What is the best microphone for violin recording? How do I make my violin sound better when recording? Is SM57 good for violin?

It's difficult to answer these questions without knowing more about what the difference is in a microphone's polar patterns and its dynamics range. What is a dynamic range? Simply put, it's the variation between noise and signal level, which can be ideal or not depending on your needs. Let's take a look at some common situations where you might need a microphone with a dynamic range.

What was that coffee shop just a few minutes ago? If you had that same sound coming out of that same coffee shop a few hours ago, would it be good or bad? It would probably be bad. Because that same coffee shop was captured by a "clean" microphone, no background noise was introduced during playback. That is the kind of thing we call a "clean band."

Just a few seconds ago, that same coffee shop recorded a 4 hour demo. A lot of people arrived for the preview and left after just one hour. Let's assume we have a perfect sounding system with no background noise and no ambient influences. What is needed to record a good performance? A dynamic mic with a good enough pickup to handle the above mentioned situation would be ideal. Let us start with cardioid microphones. These are the best in all sense. They capture a very large area with a minimum of distortions.
