Best Sounding Acoustic Guitar

How Do You Find the Best Sounding Acoustic Guitar?

What's the best sounding acoustic guitar? This is one question many people often ask when they are first getting started learning to play an acoustic guitar. After all, it can be very difficult knowing which guitar works best for you when you are just starting out. So how do acoustic guitars sound different if you change the strings or pick ups?

- Do acoustic guitars come with fancy electronics that are unnecessary? Before you buy a guitar, make sure it has all of the features you need. You don't want a guitar that sounds great when you're sitting in the stands, but sounds terrible when you're up in the rafters. "Real" acoustic guitars come with real wood, so you get the best sound.

- What is the best tonewood for an acoustic guitar? Some people use woods such as ash, mahogany or ebony. Others prefer to use woods that have a "warmth" to them. A lot of guitar players like to use mahogany, because its sound has a nice "twangy" tone that some other woods don't have.

- Do acoustic guitars come with a lot of perks besides a great sound? There are many different types of woods used to create a guitar's tone. Many classical guitarists use rosewood back and sides, along with a solid spruce sound. Rosewood and spruce are also commonly used to create a deeper "twangy" tone, which is perfect for more "organic" type songs.

- Do acoustic guitars come with a variety of accessories included? Yes! A lot of today's models include a variety of electronic hardware like volume knobs, tone buttons, pickup modules, tremolo picking, whammy bar, etc. It is also common to find a jack cabinet, which is similar to a mini bass amp. Other accessories include bridge/parallel pickups, phase shifting circuitry, phase distortion, etc.

- Do acoustic guitars have a quality build quality? Of course they do! A solid wood body, along with a good neck joint and pickguard, high end fittings, and a quality electronics system all contribute to a higher build quality.

- What kind of neck joint does the guitar have? necks can be fitted with a "pearl finish" or a laminated finish. Most players prefer the pearl finish due to its rich tone and bright sound, but some do prefer the laminated finish for its more opaque tone. Whatever you decide on, both joints produce great tones.

- Do I need to change my strings often? Strings are available in several different sizes for different playing styles. If your playing fast/pitched, you may want to consider purchasing beginner set of strings so that you have something to start out with. A good recommendation by fender factory experts is that beginners purchase half-size strings so that they can get some practice before investing in the much larger full size strings. Beginner guitars also have fender parts and cables that will allow you to easily perform basic adjustments.

- What kind of sound do I want from my guitar? Some people prefer a "cranked up" sound, where as others want a "deep" tone. Another option is to purchase a "distorted" model. One of the biggest mistakes many people make when purchasing a cheap guitar is believing that they have to sacrifice sound quality in order to save money. Purchasing an expensive guitar will not improve your ability to play if you are not comfortable with it, in fact, it will actually damage your instrument's ability to produce sound!

- What do I like to do with my guitar? This is the most important question when purchasing a new instrument. Do you plan on playing mostly solo or lead, or do you have a few strumming techniques that you use frequently? A guitar should sound great with what you already have - in particular, if you have a good ear, you should be able to identify a better wood to buy (you'll be able to hear this with a friend by placing your fingers in the guitar's cup with your mouth open a little). However, even with a top wood instrument, the sound produced by the strings may need improvement.

- Which guitar brand or manufacturer should I go for? This is primarily determined by your budget, but also by what you plan on doing with your instrument. If you plan on learning solo or lead, then you can buy a high-end brand for a slightly higher price. On the other hand, if you plan on playing mostly in the lower range of the fretboard, then you should stick to a more moderately priced brand. Your local music store or even an online store will likely have a very detailed list of brands available, as well as the specifics of each guitar's construction type.

- What type of finish should I get? Finishes vary greatly. Some have better tone than others, so you may want to choose a different finish for your instrument. The most common finishes are either rosewood or mahogany, which are slightly darker and have a more "organic" sound to them (much like the sound that a spruce would give). Some guitars have a "distressed" finish, which is similar to a wood cut just a few layers higher, and again will have a different tone than a finished mahogany or rosewood would have.
