Best Wifi Router With Vlan Tagging

How to Choose Best Wireless Router With VLAN Tagging?

Before you answer that, let me give you the details about what VLAN is. VLAN stands for Virtual Local Area Networks which is a class of network that exists between Ethernet and WiFi adapters. The technology is new and is still in its early stages so I will not go into great detail about it. I will however tell you who uses VLAN and why. If you are not familiar with VLAN and want to know if your router supports it or not then read on.

A good router supports at least some form of VLAN technology. If your router supports WEP ( Shared Endpoint Detection), then it supports VLAN tagging and if it does not support WEP (wanemode) then it does not support VLAN tagging. You can always tell a router supports VLAN by looking at the port status LED and if it has four lights and they all are red, then your router supports VLAN. On the other hand if it has two lights and one of them is blue, then your router does not support VLAN.

If your router is configured to use default, unconfigured SSID, then there is no way for your network to distinguish between internal and external networks. Just as an example; if you set up your home office in room 101, and your computer in room 100, both of them will connect to the same wireless network. The only difference is that the computer in room 101 is in office and the computer in room 100 is at home. Your router simply scans the entire range of available networks. It will not distinguish between these two computers and hence your network will be sharing the Wi-Fi connection.

Now that you have this basic information about the types of networks and their corresponding Wi-Fi Routers, it is time to move on to deeper levels of analysis. First thing that you should check is whether your router supports VLAN on both sides. Almost all of the latest routers do. Even Linksys Eero and D-Link router supports VLAN on both the sides.

Next step is the network configuration. On the top of the screen there will be a configuration button. You need to click here. You will get a new configuration page. Here you need to enter the details like username, password and enable the Wireless LAN. You also have an option to enter the security key.

Now the real interesting part starts from here. The next network configuration that you need to enter is the Wireless Range entry where you have to enter the SSID and the mode of your network (WAP or MPLS). In case you are using WAP, there is also an option for choosing a WEP key and specify a secure key.

And last but not the least the WEP key confirmation. If you have selected a strong key, then you need to enter the confirmation code to ensure the integrity of the network. You can also enter the confirm code to avoid the network configuration to be disabled. Once you are done with this step, the wireless router would be ready to use.

Now you should test your network configuration by typing 'help'. There you can find more information about wpa support in your router. And the last step is to connect your router to the computer. It should detect and access the network configuration.

If everything looks fine, then you can proceed to connect other devices in your home. Just remember to provide each devices with their own SSID. You need also to set up an alarm with your alarm company (i.e. security company for wired security) so that they can contact you in case there is any problem.

Another important thing that you need to consider is to configure the security of your router with WPA. For this, you will need a separate license. You can purchase it from the retailer. Then you should connect your router to your computer and check whether it responds with a handshake request.

If everything looks fine after doing all the above, then you are ready to enjoy your new found security. If something goes wrong, you can contact your security provider. They will either fix the issue by re-keying your router, or give you a more thorough solution which involves changing the pin on your WPA key. WPA alone is not a failsafe way to secure your network, but you have a much better chance of securing your network by using WPA combined with some other security methods such as VPN.
